About Lake Norman

Lake Norman, the largest manmade lake in North Carolina, was created in 1963 when Duke Power built Cowans Ford Dam on the Catawba River.  The lake waters engulfed numerous farms and farmhouses.  With 520 miles of shoreline and a surface area of more than 32,475 acres, Lake Norman is an "inland sea".  Named after former Duke Power president Norman Cocke, Lake Norman is nearly as large as the other ten lakes on the Catawba combined.

Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln and Mecklenburg Counties all border the lake.  Duke Power State Park on the northern shore offers the only public swimming area, nature trails, and boat ramps.  The southern shores boast three county parks ; Blythe Landing, Jetton Road Park and Ramsey Creek.  Recreational outdoor and water activities abound including golfing, power boating, sailing, skiing, windsurfing, and fishing.  The favorite fish of Lake Norman are the White Bass, Bluegill, Black Crappie, Threadfin Shad, Carp, Channel Catfish, Striped Bass, and the Largemouth Bass.

Approximately 15-20 miles north of downtown
Charlotte, the Lake Norman area Including Corenelius, Davidson and Huntersivlle, is a great location for primary residences, second homes and weekend getaway properties.  Condominium and apartment communities offer additonal ways to enjoy lake living. About Charlotte

Named for Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of George III of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Charlotte was founded by Geramn and Scots-Irish settlers around 1750 .  From 1753 to 1880, Charlotte was little more than an inland trading village, but began growing into a small town after the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s.  During the next twenty years, the Civil War and reconstruction hampered the growth of Charlotte greatly.  It wasn't until 1870 that Charlotte started to play an increasingly important role in the area economy.

In the early 1900's, Charlotte's growth took off and the city started becoming a major distribution and finance center in the region.  Prior to the first World War, Charlotte had electric trolleys and its first suburb, Dilworth.  Also in this period, Belk Department Store opened and the first automobiles started appearing.

By 1930, Charlotte's blueprints for growth were established and many of the high-rise buildings, fine communities and most prominent businesses were in place.  The City Hall building at 600 E. Trade was built, the Federal Reserve opened and the Charlotte Symphony was organized during this period.  After the second World War and the Korean War, Charlotte emerged as a textile and distribution center and the South's largest city.

During the 1960s Charlotte's growth began to mushroom.  The population doubled and the growth continues today.  Charlotte has become a national center for finance and industry with close ties to the world economy.  The many lovely neighborhoods, strong cultural community and recreational oppportunities make Charlotte a very attractive place to live and work.

About Cornelius

Founded in 1893 and incorporated in 1905, the town of Cornelius can base its origins on a dispute over cotton weighing.  Two cotton firms in the town of Davidson disagreed over the appointment of an offical town cotton weigher.  After a heated election, legislation was enacted to permit the town to hire a cotton weigher.  The opposing firm relocated most of its operations south of the town limits of Davidson.
Due to impassible road conditions during rainy weather, many cotton farmers chose to sell their crops to the relocated cotton firm just south of Davidson.  Encouraged by their sucess, the owners of the cotton purchasing business were inspired to build a cotton mill.  Financial backing for their venture was found in Benjamin Cornelius. Though originally incorporated as "Liverpool", the town was later renamed Cornelius in honor of J. B. Cornelius.

The damming of the Catawaba River and creation of Lake Norman in 1963 by Duke Power had a great impact on the development and growth of Corenelius.  Not only providing thea area with hydroelectric power, Lake Norman created excellent lakeside real estate and recreational opportunities.

About Huntersville NC

About 12 miles north of Charlotte in the Lake Norman area, the Town of Huntersville, North Carolina is a growing community of approximately 30,000.  Incorporated in 1873, Huntersville is believed to have been named for Robert Boston Hunter, a large land owner and cotton farmer.  Family, farming and church were the foundations of life in the early years of Huntersville.
The Virgin Manufacturing Company, a cotton mill, helped development of the town.  Bricks made in a local brick yard can still be found in many of the older buildings downtown and in the older residential sections.

Today, Huntersville residents are mixed about the explosive growth that the town and the Lake Norman area are experiencing.  Many people believe that Huntersville and Lake Norman are ready for such progress.  Older generations reminisce about "the good old days" when traffic was sparse and farmland not developed.

Many people relocating to Huntersville are drawn by the natual beauty of the area, the easy commute to Charlotte and the proximity to Lake Norman.  Housing in the area ranges from multi-millon-dollar lakefront or golf course real estate properties to median priced family homes.  Most everyone can find the home of their dreams here!

About Statesville

Scots-Irish Presbyterians and German Lutherans from Pennsylvania began arriving in the area about 1753 drawn by fertile soil and plentiful game and water.  In January 1789, Statesville was founded by an act of the General Assembly.  The Statesville area was originally known as the Fourth Creek Congreation Settlement, named after a fresh water stream, the fourth creek west of the neighboring settlement of Salisbury.  The first courthouse, built of logs on a lot next to the Fourth Creek Presbyterian Meeting House was completed by 1790.  Downtown Statesville began as the lots around the courthouse were soon sold at a public auction for other businesses.
In 1755 around two to three miles due north of the Fourth Creek settlement, a frontier fort named Fort Dobbs after the governor, was constructed.  Fort Dobbs was the western most U.S. fort and provided protection for citizens from the many active native Americans who roamed the area from 1756 to about 1764.  The fort was also considered to be the center district of the Revolutionary War.

The settlement became know as Stateville in 1790 when the legislature selected Fourth Creek Congregation as the site for the county seat.  In 1847, Statesville was incorporated as a city. Though Statesville's leaders were pursuing the idea of railroads as early as 1833, the rails didn't arrive in Statesville until 1858.  At the time, Statesville was still struggling to recover from a disastrous fire in 1855 that destroyed the majority of downtown's buildings.  Growth began as Statesville became world's largest distribution center of roots and herbs and began leading the state in the production of tobacco and whiskey.

Four days after Confederate troops surrendered at Appomattox, Yankee invaders burned downtown Statesville including the two railroad depots, freight buildings and the local newspaper office.  Everything of value not burned was stolen.  After the Civil War all rail lines to Statesville were cut to provide replacement railing in other areas.  The daunting task of rebuilding began again.

In 1982, Statesville was redesigned as a Main Street City including 110 building renovations costing over $23 million.  Today, the growth and revitalization of the downtown retail district is continuing and Statesville is listed on the National Register of historic places.  If you are looking to relocate in the area, you will find Statesville to be a grand place to call home!
